A Charming Cottage Addition

STONINGTON, CT

After a modest kitchen expansion in 2005, the owners of this charming house returned with a request for a bit more space. The challenge was to expand without overwhelming the scale of the original. The new addition comprises 950 square feet and includes a library, a master bedroom suite and connecting hallways. Each of the major spaces feature generous vaulted ceilings and an array of windows that bring light in from different directions. Connecting hallways are marked with arched doorways that mimic the openings in the original house. The master bath includes a double vanity, separate toilet room, a glass-enclosed shower, and a deep soaking tub. Tones are purposefully muted and calming, each detail with clean simple lines. The master bedroom features a line of built-in closets and French doors that open to a new bedroom terrace. This new terrace, also accessible from the library, mirrors an existing opposing terrace, bookending the library with outdoor “rooms”.
